Trump's Woke Warning Overlooks Europe's True Threat: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a misguided assessment of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "woke" policies pose an existential risk to the continent's identity. However, this perspective is based on a serious misreading of the reality. The actual danger confronting Europe is not societal but technological and economic backwardness.

A Glaring Growth Gap Separating the US and Europe

Statistics reveal a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by eighty-seven percent, while a mere 13.5% increase for the EU. Over this period, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now has a greater average income than several leading EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, about half of the global top fifty technology firms are US-based, while a mere four are European.

The Innovation Shortfall: A Critical Question

This widening disparity stems from stronger productivity growth in the United States, fueled by technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly American. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at more than $10bn, versus only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap raises a vital question: As the competition for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, where does Europe stand? Most analysts concede it is largely a two-horse race involving the United States and China, with Europe entering at a significant handicap.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several key reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic system for financing new ventures. The EU has yet to establish a true capital markets union, a factor that caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hamper Europe. A US startup can introduce a product under a single set of laws to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is split among 27 separate regimes, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was historically met with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has weakened its ability in breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

Despite these challenges, there are reasons for optimism. European leaders are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have begun to propose serious reform. Notable reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the necessity of sweeping reforms.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, these assets could support far greater levels of commercial innovation.

The continent retains considerable strengths: skilled human capital, excellent schools and universities, and world-class labs. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these foundations could trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in developing cutting-edge technologies, it can still dramatically increase economic output by implementing and tailoring advancements from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now stands at a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's technological decline has been gradual. But, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of world influence.
