Whenever a major awards ceremony nears, one notices a demand for introducing of new categories to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.
Another commentator made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. The same goes for board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front because like all single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Classifying creative works isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains a necessary evil for the industry of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they hardly constitute as a single art form.
To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement for numerous titles.
Not so for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Think about these recent excellent titles, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, intense tile-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.
Recognition Challenges
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles published annually that have no home in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.
- An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated completely that year
- Another imaginative release received no nominations that year
- Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
- Just some brain-teasers barely qualified for independent or mobile categories
Significance of Puzzle Games
Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games count as the most-played games in the world continuing this trend for many years.
The iconic tile-matching title competes with well-known building titles competing to become most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and engaging with diverse game types.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. One could readily select a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these represent titles without proper classification in important events. Puzzle game makers are working at the demanding boundary game development, creating some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Comparable to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait generations.
