Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Injections Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that people who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a major medical journal points out that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People buying such drugs need to be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

The team note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically have a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Experts propose the way of the jabs accounts for the heightened regain.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."

A Lifelong Condition?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced something flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described an individual.

This challenge is worsened if patients have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Growing Use

Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among women than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural changes.
