An Generosity of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Man I Had Just Met Helped Me Land the Job That Changed My Life

In the late 1980s, I was embarking on a low-cost journey to the European continent with a travel partner. Because my friend was interested in starting a postgraduate program in New York, we had arranged a two-week stay there en route to London.

We arrived at the postgrad residence, a big ten-floor structure on the Manhattan's Upper West Side called International House. After dropping our bags, we made our way to the dining hall, where we grabbed food, took a seat, and started talking to fellow residents.

Beside me was an gentleman from Iraq pursuing an engineering degree at Columbia University. He inquired what I did, and I shared that I had just graduated with a science degree and had been performing experiments involving microscopic analysis.

He pointed out that there was an microscopy facility at the institution – right next door to the engineering faculty, which was how he knew about it. He recommended that I ought to seek a job with them. I laughed it off, telling him that I was heading off to Europe and, even more importantly, I did not possess a US visa.

The following day I ventured out, returning to the canteen that night. The Iraqi student came up to me and informed me that he had set up a meeting for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Because he had taken the effort, I showed up for the discussion – but right away told my prospective employer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

As is common in NYC – a place where opportunities abound – she declared: “That can be arranged. How soon can you begin?” I missed my plane to London.

I worked there for three years. One of the benefits was that I was granted free tuition at Columbia, and I took advantage to complete a master’s of international affairs.

We didn't cross paths after that and I am unaware of his identity, but his selfless gesture transformed my future in numerous aspects. I would never have had the courage or nerve to approach someone at an prestigious college and seek a position. Moreover, I had consistently hoped to study abroad, but could never have afforded it without that educational benefit.

Critically, that role at the university resulted in a role in Europe where I met my wonderful partner, with whom I now have four amazing children. That encounter altered everything. That kind stranger redirected my path in life, and I’m always appreciative.
